LINE MASS
The line-mass (or mass-line) requires the basic design of having a mass design but retaining sufficient line material to identify line interest. The style makes it easy for the designer to incorporate other colors, textures and plant materials. Spiky plant materials fit into this design style very well. While this style gives the arranger a great deal of freedom and latitude, restraint should be exercised in order that one does not provide so much mass that the line becomes minimized. This is a popular design style in miniatures. Selecting line material sufficiently strong is a key. The total integration of textures, of sizes, of gradation of plant materials, and grouping of colors is essential. Since this style design should have some depth, the placement of materials is critical.
The arrangement may borrow from the Oriental and other design styles such as mast. Sufficient restraint must be employed that the line is never lost or obscured.
